A public meeting held in Bengaluru on Sunday endorsed the formation of a Karnataka-centric regional party. Notable attendees included Kannada writer Kum. Veerabhadrappa and veteran music composer Hamsalekha. The event was organized by a group of Kannada software engineers and other professionals.
Kum. Veerabhadrappa argued that a Karnataka-centric regional party is the ideal platform to secure the legitimate rights of Kannadigas. "Kannada will not be saved by the educated elite. It is the villagers and the unlettered who will preserve it. We need to take this message to them. The data and facts presented today will open everyone’s eyes to the necessity of a Kannada-centric political movement," he said.
The event was organized by like-minded individuals, including journalist S. Shyam Prasad, filmmakers B.M. Giriraj and Kaviraj, advocate C.S. Hariprasad, and software engineers Arun Javgal, Shivanna Gundanavar, Sajith, Bhuvanesh Kadaraiah, Shruti Marulappa, Ravi Aaladamara, Sarika Shobha Vinayaka, and Sushma Prakash.
Senior journalist B.M. Haneef and Kannada activist Anand Guru of Banavasi Balaga also shared their perspectives. Haneef stressed the importance of addressing Karnataka-specific issues, such as the impending Lok Sabha delimitation, which could adversely affect Karnataka and other southern states. Anand Guru spoke about the declining Kannada-speaking population and how a Karnataka-based party could protect the interests of its people.
Over 500 people gathered at Basava Bhavan, Chalukya Circle, to support the formation of the new party. The meeting, promoted exclusively on social media, attracted enthusiasts from various parts of Karnataka.
