 Dr. Narayana Gowda congratulates the winners of ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ and ‘Youth Sports Officer for a Day’ competition


Bengaluru, Actober (Karnataka Information) :

On the occasion of International Day of Girl Child, Dr. Narayana Gowda, Hon’ble Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports congratulated British High Commission, Bengaluru as it announced the winner of the Deputy High Commissioner for a Day competition. The winner is a 20-yr-old Computer Science engineering student Ms. Medha Koppam from Bengaluru.

The Hon’ble Minister also announced the state-wide initiative ‘Youth Sports Officer for a Day’ contest for girls aged 18-23 organised by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports. The Hon’ble Minister congratulated and announced the winners for each of the 31 districts saying, “The girls of today are future leaders of tomorrow. I am sure that these young girls will benefit from this unique opportunity in honing their leadership skills given by British High Commission and Government of Karnataka. The State NSS and SDG Cell is also actively engaged in ensuring the initiative is successful.”

We are witnessing a paradigm shift in women’s role across sectors. Women are not just taking leadership roles but are strengthening them too thanks to many inspiring initiatives such as this one. I congratulate Medha and wish her the best in taking charge of the High Commissioner’s role. We are confident that such an opportunity will help strengthen the potential of girls. Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports and British High Commission will continue to work together and provide more opportunities for young women,” he said.

This contest had 121 entries across the state amongst which 31 entries were chosen by the District Committee headed by Assistant Directors of Youth Department. The girls from the state girls drew inspiration from many renowned personalities including Saalumarada Thimmakka  , Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale, Jhansi Rani, Sarojini Naidu, Sudha Murthy, Arunima Sinha, Savitribai Phule and our own IAS officers Dr. Shalini Rajneesh and Ms. Rohini Sindhoori.

Saalumarada Thimmakka - a 110-yr-old Padma Shri awardee from Karnataka who has contributed extensively towards afforestation has inspired Medha Koppam.

Speaking about the High Commissioner for Day initiative, Dr. Andrew Fleming, Deputy High Commissioner said, “As we celebrate the Day of the Girl Child today, we are excited to have Ms. Medha from Karnataka for the role of High Commissioner. She’s a well-deserving candidate and is determined to make a difference. We hope the initiative inspires many more girls to reach new heights.”

Ms Chaitanya and Ms Pavitra, winners from Bengaluru Urban and Rural accompanied Additional Chief Secretary – Planning - Dr Shalini Rajneesh, and experienced the Karnataka Development Program review meeting. They also met with the Deputy High Commissioner Dr Andrew Fleming and Commissioner of DYES – Shri Gopala Krishna IAS.
