Bengalruru, October 27, (Karnataka Information) :Veteran Gandhian and Social Worker Dr. S.N. Subba Rao passed away on 27 October, Morning at SMS hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan. Lovingly called “Bhaiji” by everyone, he played a key role in surrender and rehabilitation of dacoits form the Chambal vally in 1972. 

Born in 1929 in Bangalore, Karnatka, at the young age of 13, he got inspird by Mahathama Gandhi and partivipated in the Quit India Movement. After coming in contact with his mentor Dr. N.S. Hardiker at Chitradurga, he joined Indian National Congres Seva Dal and continued his activities from New Delhi. During the Gandhi centtenary year, he was the Director of a “Gandhi Darshan Train”, taking the message of Gandhi to the remotest corners of India. In 1970, he founded the Mahathama Gandhi Sewa Ashram in Chambal valley at Joura, Madhya Pradesh. The asham conducts gramodyog camps. To mobilize youth and spread the message of peace, love and communal harmony, he founded the National Youth Project in 1971, under which hundreds of youth camp were held across the country, especially in the remote corners of North East and communally sensitive regions in in Jammu & Kashmir. Having travelled all across the world carrying the massage of peace and brotherhood, he took part in the Conference of world religios in South Africa in 2001. Recipient of several awards for his tireless work including the esteemed Padmashri by the Govt. of India. Rajiv Gandhi National Sadghavana Award, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, Mahathama Gandhi Puraskar, he led a simle life, wearing khadi travelling by train mostly and owning few possession. He is survived by his youngest brother. His last rites will be held at the Gandhi Sewa Ashram at Joura.
